Friendship Village Chesterfield Scores in Mileage Challenge

Residents of Friendship Village Chesterfield (FVC) this spring blew out a nationwide challenge from their management company to replicate 1,310 miles of cardiovascular activity, a goal set by a company employee in overcoming personal tragedy.

More than 100 residents of the senior living community at 15201 Olive Blvd. chalked up 7,005 miles to rank fourth among 57 communities nationwide in Project 1310.

The cardiovascular challenge of Project 1310 stemmed from Elizabeth Proffitt, a management company employee at a community in Pennsylvania, also managed by Life Care Services.  After the untimely death of her husband in 2005, Proffitt sought to overcome her grief through exercise.

With the help of a friend and the support of her employer, Proffitt competed in 50 marathons in all 50 states before the age of 50.  She completed her goal in the autumn of 2013 at the age of 49.

Project 1310 comes in recognition of the number of miles Proffitt ran in the 50 marathons: 1,310.

Guidelines for the Project 1310 challenge allowed participants to log their 1,310 miles by walking, running, swimming or other cardiovascular exercise. Residents recorded mileage for one month using pedometers or other measuring devices.

With health and wellness a top priority at FVC, fitness coordinator Carla DeGrande worked with the Chesterfield residents to match and ultimately surpass the 1,310 mileage goal during a four week period this spring.

“Project 1310 fit in with our lifestyle at Friendship Village,” Buddy Rains, resident said. “We live life to the fullest and aren’t afraid to challenge ourselves to achieve better, healthier lives.”

DeGrande pointed out that Project 1310 underscores the already strong culture of wellness and fitness at FVC where she promotes eight dimensions of wellness including intellectual, physical, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, vocational and health services.

“Through Project 1310, thousands of seniors reaped the physical, emotional, cognitive and social benefits of exercise.  The program built a sense of competition and camaraderie among participating communities,” DeGrande said.

Friendship Village Sunset Hills (FVSH) also competed logging 1,709 miles to surpass the goal.

Proffitt’s employer and the management company for FVC and FVSH, Life Care Services, provides management services to 120 senior living communities throughout the United States.
